...integrating the mathematical and scientific with the creative and artistic.
Cynthia Lynn Miller

The Arts have been my lifelong passion. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Illinois, I studied Copper Enameling with Richard Loving at the Art Institute of Chicago. A Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Northwestern University in 1978 completed my formal training. I have also acted and directed professionally and have been a member of Actors' Equity Association, the Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
While my two sons were growing up, I lived in Evanston, Illinois; I worked as an account executive in advertising and marketing. I then taught Art at Columbia College and at the International Academy of Design in Chicago.
Since moving to Tucson, Arizona, in 2000, I have been teaching Art, Theatre, and Yoga at Pima College. Through my company, Wellness Works!, I have given Stress Reduction Seminars at businesses in Tucson.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always been fascinated with brilliant, jewel-like color. Copper enameling captures and celebrates light like no other medium I know. As each piece cools, the colors emerge and suggest the next colors.
Many of my enameled pieces are like musical motifs: colors overlay and peek through each other. Just as jazz or chamber musicians will explore, dialogue, and trade musical themes from one instrument to another, so color moves from one area to another on the copper.

THE PROCESS OF ENAMELING ON COPPER
Scour the copper until it gleams and then sift powdered glass onto the copper. Place the dusted copper into a kiln which has been heated to 1200-1500 degrees. After the powdered glass becomes molten, flows, and fuses onto the copper, carefully remove the piece and allow it to cool. Sometimes enamel "jewels" are added to the design. Repeat the dusting-and-firing cycle until the desired effect is achieved. There can be as many as ten firings.
